We are presenting a list of the reptile species from Lençóis Maranhenses National Park (LMNP), Maranhão, Brazil, obtained during 235 days of field work. The study area is located in the contact zone between three major Neotropical ecosystems: Amazonia, Caatinga, and Cerrado. The PNLM encompasses the largest dune fields in Brazil, wide shrubby areas (restingas), lakes, mangroves, and many freshwater lagoons. We have recorded 42 species of reptiles in the area: 24 snakes, 12 lizards, two worm lizards, three turtles, and one alligator. About 81 % of the recorded species occurred only in restinga areas. Our data highlights the uniqueness of the PNLM in the context of the biomes that surround it and shows the importance of efforts to improve the conservation of reptiles living in the restinga, which currently comprise only about 20 % of the total area protected by the park, but which are the mesohabitat containing most of the reptile species in the Lençóis Maranhenses complex of habitats.  相似文献

Chaetaglaea tremula (Harvey) occurs through the Gulf States, from southern Florida, west to eastern Texas. Coastal populations, previously referred to Chaetaglaea tremula occurring from the Carolinas, at least as far north as Massachusetts and shoreline dunes in southwestern Ontario are recognized as distinct and described here as Chaetaglaea rhonda. Adults and genitalia are illustrated for Chaetaglaea rhonda and Chaetaglaea tremula.  相似文献

This study investigates lightning density in relation to burning frequency in five South African biomes. Data from automatic lightning flash counters distributed throughout South Africa are used to estimate the range and mean values of annual lightning ground-strike density in each biome. The lowest average lightning frequencies were recorded in the karoo and fynbos biomes, while the highest values were obtained in the sour and inland mountain divisions of the grassland biome, with intermediate values computed for the savanna-woodland and forest biomes. These results were compared with published findings on the effects of different burning frequencies on plant communities in each biome. In general, plant communities occurring in areas experiencing the highest annual lightning densities (e.g., sour and mixed grassland, and moist savanna-woodland) tolerate and require more frequent burning than those typical of areas subject to lower lightning densities (e.g., fynbos, forest, sweet grassland, and arid savanna-woodland). These findings suggest that the constituent plant populations in each biome have adapted to burning frequency according to the local probability of ignition by lightning in the areas they inhabit, and that present day responses of plant communities to burning reflect their ancestral exposure to fire in the course of their evolutionary development under pre-existing, natural fire regimes.Research sponsered by the South African Council for Scientific and Industrial Research. Plant species affect soil bacterial diversity and compositions. However, little is known about the role of dominant plant species in shaping the soil bacterial community during the restoration of sandy grasslands in Horqin Sandy Land, northern China. We established a mesocosm pots experiment to investigate short‐term responses of soil bacterial diversity and composition, and the related soil properties in degraded soils without vegetation (bare sand as the control, CK) to restoration with five plant species that dominate across restoration stages: Agriophyllum squarrosum (AS), Artemisia halodendron (AH), Setaria viridis (SV), Chenopodium acuminatum (CA), and Corispermum macrocarpum (CM). We used redundancy analysis (RDA) to analyze the association between soil bacterial composition and soil properties in different plant species. Our results indicated that soil bacterial diversity was significantly lower in vegetated soils independent of plant species than in the CK. Specifically, soil bacterial species richness and diversity were lower under the shrub AH and the herbaceous plants AS, SV, and CA, and soil bacterial abundance was lower under AH compared with the CK. A field investigation confirmed the same trends where soil bacteria diversity was lower under AS and AH than in bare sand. The high‐sequence annotation analysis showed that Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, and Bacteroidetes were the most common phyla in sandy land irrespective of soil plant cover. The OTUs (operational taxonomic units) indicated that some bacterial species were specific to the host plants. Relative to bare sand (CK), soils with vegetative cover exhibited lower soil water content and temperature, and higher soil carbon and nitrogen contents. The RDA result indicated that, in addition to plant species, soil water and nitrogen contents were the most important factors shaping soil bacterial composition in semiarid sandy land. Our study from the pot and field investigations clearly demonstrated that planting dominant species in bare sand impacts bacterial diversity. In semiarid ecosystems, changes in the dominant plant species during vegetation restoration efforts can affect the soil bacterial diversity and composition through the direct effects of plants and the indirect effects of soil properties that are driven by plant species.  相似文献

A test for hydrotropic behavior by roots of two coastal dune shrubs   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Root hydrotropism could be a means by which plants forage for limited and patchy distributions of soil water. While root hydrotropism has been induced in distinctly artificial conditions, it is unclear if it operates in natural settings. Here, we tested for this possibility in seedlings of two species of dune shrubs. Growth of individual roots in sand-filled observation chambers was monitored in response to moisture-rich patches and resultant soil water gradients. Chambers were designed so that roots could intercept the moisture gradients but not the moisture-rich patches simply through gravitropism. While up to 12% of the Eriogonum parvifolium roots grew into the moisture-rich patches, comparable root growth was observed in the control. None of the Artemisia californica roots grew into the patches. Thus, in a reasonable simulation of field conditions, we found no compelling evidence for hydrotropic root behavior in seedlings of these two dune shrubs. Our results leave the ecological significance of root hydrotropism in question.  相似文献

Vesicular-arbuscular (VA) mycorrhizal fungi in pure patches of coastal dune plantsElymus mollis, Wedelia prostrata andZoysia macrostachya were examined for frequency of occurrence and number of spores of VA mycorrhizal fungi over one year. Six species in three genera of VA mycorrhizal fungi were recovered. Under a patch ofE. mollis, spores ofAcaulospora sp. 1,Glomus tortuosum, Glomus sp. 1,Glomus sp. 2 andScutellospora gregaria were recovered. Spores ofGlomus spp. were most common. Abstract Alpine sand dunes are a rare phenomenon. On the Central Plateau of Tasmania parabolic dunes occur on the leeward of glaciofluvial lakes. The largest such complex is at Lake Augusta where seven sand dune communities and two slack communities were recognized from a sorted table produced by a polythetic divisive classification of floristic data. Fen was found on the rocky parts of the lake shore, while short alpine herbfield (‘marsupial lawn’) occurred in seasonally inundated slacks. Freshly mobilized sand had distinct shrubland communities, two of which exclusively occupied the fresh sand of the foredunes, while one occurred on remobilized older soils. Three communities formed a toposequence on the older soils of the well-drained dunes. Zonation was not strong beyond the foredune. Species richness and height generally increased inland. The older soils were more nutrient rich than the younger sands, a phenomenon probably attributable to the ultimate igneous origin of the material. The dunes have considerable conservation significance. Activities that could cause further mobilization need to be restricted.  相似文献

Summary The aim of the study presented here is to determine the relation between the vegetation and the ground water régime in the dune slacks on the island of Voorne. A distinction is made between the spatial and the temporal variation in the vegetation. On the basis of data from a transect the relation between the spatial variation and the water-table is determined. With respect to the temporal variation data recorded on permanent plots were used. Both the variation in space and that in time proved to be related to differences in the ground water régime.
